Dacian Fortresses Area

The Orăștie Mountains — the fortified core of the Dacian Kingdom, UNESCO heritage since 1999.

The Orăștie Mountains hold five of the six Dacian fortresses on the UNESCO World Heritage list (the sixth, Căpâlna, is in Alba county): Sarmizegetusa Regia — the capital of Decebalus's kingdom —, Costești-Cetățuie, Costești-Blidaru, Piatra Roșie and Bănița.

The area is visited from Orăștie, the gateway town to the trails leading up to the fortress ruins, built in the famous “murus dacicus” technique.
