Metaliferi Mountains
The Hunedoara side of the “gold quadrilateral” — Brad, Săcărâmb and Crișcior, gold mining without interruption from Roman times to the 20th century.

The Metaliferi Mountains, in the county's north-west, hold the Hunedoara portion of the “gold quadrilateral” — one of Europe's richest gold-bearing regions. Brad is the area's historic centre, with its own Gold Museum; nearby lie Ruda-Brad, with a Roman mining gallery from the 2nd-3rd centuries AD, and Crișcior, with a 14th-15th century church.
At Săcărâmb, worked without interruption since 1746, six minerals were described for the first time in the world, including sylvanite (1835) — the deposit was regarded, for nearly 130 years (1748-1876), as the most profitable in Europe.
