Mining & mountain zone
Jiu Valley
The Jiu Valley coal basin — six mining towns at the foot of the Parâng, Retezat and Vâlcan massifs.

The Jiu Valley comprises six towns — Petroșani, Petrila, Vulcan, Lupeni, Uricani and Aninoasa — built around coal mining, in a valley surrounded by three mountain massifs.
Today the area combines industrial heritage (mines, museums, former workers' colonies) with direct access to mountain trails and the Parâng resort, a few kilometres from Petroșani.
