Church of the Descent of the Holy Spirit, Ostrov

One of the oldest Romanian stone churches in Transylvania, founded by local knezes in the 14th century.

Ostrov, in Râu de Mori commune, lies on the old Roman road between Sarmizegetusa and the point where the Strei leaves the basin, and takes its name (“islet”) from its setting, surrounded by the Râul Mare and the Apa Borii. The Church of the Descent of the Holy Spirit, founded by local knezes, predates the mid-14th century; in 1360 Peter of Ostrov was the district's first known archpriest.

Only the south and west walls of the nave survive from the first building; today's appearance results from works in the second half of the 18th century and the early 19th. The village's noble family moved from Catholicism to Calvinism, the church later became Greek Catholic and, after 1948, Orthodox. Excavations in 1996 established its building phases.
