St George's Church, Streisângeorgiu

A Romanesque church from 1313–1314 with murals from three periods — one of Romania's oldest churches still in use.

On the edge of Călan, in Streisângeorgiu, stands one of the oldest medieval buildings in Transylvania still in use. A Slavonic-Romanian inscription found in the altar says the stone church was made in 1313–1314, “with the help of Saint George”, for the forgiveness of the sins of the knez Balea and the priest Naneș, and that it was painted by Teofil the painter.

Excavations showed that a wooden church with the same plan stood here earlier, and the graves around it date from the 12th–13th centuries. The murals survive from three stages — 1313–1314, 1409 and 1743 — and Roman slabs from a nearby villa rustica can be seen in the walls.
