Kendeffy Castle

The Kendeffy family's neo-Gothic castle from 1782, a former hotel, now closed — it can only be seen from outside.

The castle in Sântămăria-Orlea was built in 1782 by Count Elek Kendeffy, on the site of an older manor, as the family's residence in the Hațeg Country. A riding hall was added in the early 19th century, and in the second half of that century Árpád Kendeffy had it remodelled in neo-Gothic style to plans by architect József Schulz, with decoration by Ferenc Storno. The façade bears a Baroque plaque with the Kendeffy and Bethlen coats of arms and a Latin inscription from 1782.

After nationalisation it hosted children's summer camps, and in the 1980s it became a hotel. After 1990 it was returned to the family's heirs but has stayed unused: in 2024 it had been closed for nearly two decades. The castle is not open to visitors; it can be seen from the road.
