Mălăiești Fortress

A 14th-century noble fortress with a keep and curtain wall, restored with EU funds, at the foot of the Retezat.

The fortress stands in the village of Mălăiești, Sălașu de Sus commune, in the south of Țara Hațegului towards the Retezat Mountains. The complex — a keep surrounded by a stone curtain wall — dates from the 14th century and was built by local nobles; the enclosure was later strengthened with four towers.

The keep, about 11 m high with 1.5 m thick walls, had several levels, the lower ones used for provisions. The fortress was abandoned in the 17th century, and some of its stone was reused in 1907–1909 to build the village's Orthodox church.

The monument was rehabilitated mostly with European funds, with an access road, parking, architectural lighting and a small amphitheatre for events.
