Franciscan Monastery of Deva

A Baroque monastery and church in Deva, built by friars from Chiprovtsi and completed by 1752.

The Franciscan Monastery of Deva, dedicated to St Mary, is a historic and architectural monument (LMI code HD-II-a-B-03231). It was founded in the early 18th century by monks of the Bulgarian province of the Franciscan Order, supported by the Catholics of Chiprovtsi, who emigrated en masse to Wallachia and Transylvania at the end of the 17th century. The complex was built in stages, up to 1752.

The quadrangular building follows the style of Transylvanian Franciscan monasteries, with the Baroque church attached to the south-east corner; it is built of stone and brick, with relief decoration and late-Baroque statuettes. It burned several times — in 1707, set alight by the troops of General Acton, then in 1748 and 1872 — and in 1749 the church was enlarged using material from the damaged buildings.
