Lake Gura Apelor

The mountain lake behind Romania's tallest dam (168 m), at the entrance to Retezat National Park.

Lake Gura Apelor formed behind the dam of the same name, built between 1975 and 1986 on the Râul Mare river, where it meets the Lăpușnicul Mare, Lăpușnicul Mic and Șes streams, about 40 km from Hațeg. The rock-fill dam with a clay core is 168 m high, the tallest in Romania.

The lake covers about 390 ha and holds some 210 million m³ of water, carried through an underground conduit to the Retezat hydropower plant (335 MW), part of the Râul Mare–Retezat hydro scheme. The road to the dam climbs the Râul Mare valley from Râu de Mori.
