Vulcan Pass

A historic 1,621 m pass linking the Jiu Valley to Oltenia.

Vulcan Pass is a mountain pass at 1,621 m altitude, in the eastern Vâlcan Mountains, on the border between Hunedoara and Gorj counties. It connects the Petroșani Depression with the Târgu Jiu – Câmpu Mare sub-Carpathian depression, via county road DJ664 (Vulcan–Schela).

The road over the pass follows a route used since antiquity, historically crossed by Prince Michael the Brave in 1600, on his way to Vienna. In September 1916, the pass was also the site of fighting between Romanian and German/Austro-Hungarian troops during World War I.
