Coral Cave

A cave reserve in the Vâlcan Mountains with a chamber of coralloid formations; closed to the public since 1972.

Coral Cave lies in the Vâlcan Mountains, in the Scorota valley, about 12 km from Câmpu lui Neag, at roughly 1,000 m altitude, below the Cioaca ridge. It was discovered in 1970 by members of the “Focul Viu” caving club of Bucharest; its plan was drawn up a year later, and in 1972 it was declared a speleological reserve and closed to the public.

It is a linear, fossil, descending cave 83 m long. A gallery 2–4 m high narrows to 1 m at a spot called the Altar; after about 50 m comes a 5 m drop, at whose foot begins the 30 m-long Coralite Chamber. As a reserve, it cannot be visited.
