Certeju de Sus
A mining commune in the Metaliferi Mountains, with Săcărâmb, Horea's Rock and Făerag Lake, in the heart of Transylvanian gold country.

Certeju de Sus is a commune in the north of Hunedoara County, in the Metaliferi Mountains, made up of the villages of Certeju de Sus (the seat), Bocșa Mare, Bocșa Mică, Hondol, Măgura-Toplița, Nojag, Săcărâmb, Toplița Mureșului and Vărmaga.
The area has been a mining zone since 1746, when Maria Theresa decided to revive gold mining. The first gold smelter opened in 1763 and ran for 119 years. Horea's Rock recalls the mobilisation of miners in the 1784 uprising.
For walks and relaxation there is Făerag Lake, a 4 ha reservoir up to 8.7 m deep, and a Romsilva lodge. Săcărâmb has a Roman Catholic church, and the “Săcărâmb Hillocks” reserve lies in the commune's area.
