Sarmizegetusa

The commune built over the capital of Roman Dacia, Ulpia Traiana Sarmizegetusa.

Sarmizegetusa is a commune in the Hațeg Country, made up of Sarmizegetusa (the seat), Breazova, Hobița-Grădiște, Păucinești and Zeicani. Locals still call it Grădiște — from the Slavic grad, “fortress”, after the Roman ruins — and it received the official name Sarmizegetusa in 1941.

The village stands right on the site of Ulpia Traiana Sarmizegetusa, the capital of Roman Dacia founded after AD 106: the forum, the amphitheatre with about 5,000 seats and the temples can be visited in the middle of the village, and the Archaeology Museum holds the finds.

The commune also has the Dacian fortress at Zeicani and the site of a Roman villa rustica at Breazova. The road through Zeicani leads to the Iron Gates of Transylvania pass and on to the Banat.
