Corvin Castle fully restored — its first complete restoration in more than a century

The €11.6 million works are finished: towers, bridge, roofs and halls restored, plus new areas opened to visitors.

The Corvin Castle restoration project was completed at the end of August 2026, after two EU-funded phases: €5 million through the Regional Operational Programme (2018–2023) and €6.6 million through Romania's Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR). It is the monument's first complete restoration since the works carried out between 1868 and 1914.

The restored parts include the Buzdugan (Mace) Tower and the “Cavalier” at its top, the access bridge by the old Gate Tower, the roofs, the Diet Hall and the Knights' Hall. In the Matia Loggia, the fresco with the coats of arms of the great noble families, including those of King Vladislaus Jagiellon and John Hunyadi (Iancu de Hunedoara), has been recreated. Visitors can now also enter new areas such as the Bears' Pit, the Chapel Bridge and the “Between the Walls” space.

Hunedoara City Hall is already preparing the next phases, worth over €15 million: restoring the Hussars' Courtyard and the circular bridge, plus an 8,000 m² Ethnographic Museum of the Pădureni region.
