Premiere at the Deva Art Theatre: “The Merchant of Venice – Republic 2.0”
Friday, 13 November 2026, from 19:00, the Deva Art Theatre premieres a staging after Shakespeare, directed by Vlad Popescu, with Venice imagined as a republic of the future.
The staging “The Merchant of Venice – Republic 2.0” imagines Shakespeare's Venice as a republic of the future and puts Shylock at its centre. The creators say it is not a story about the past but about us; it offers no simple answers and does not divide the characters into good and bad, instead inviting the audience “to look beyond the masks”.
Direction and scenography are by Vlad Popescu, and the cast of 16 includes Ștefan Abrudan, Cosmin Crețu, Armand Crișan, Diana Dănilă and Andreea Pascu. The show is recommended for ages 14 and over; tickets are available on eventbook.ro.
