Church of the Holy Archangels, Căstău

A large stone church built in 1868–1874 in the village of Căstău, on the site of an 18th-century chapel.

Căstău, a village of Beriu commune, has a large church dedicated to the Archangels Michael and Gabriel, built between 1868 and 1874 under the priests Aron and Ioan Dănilă. It replaced a small stone church recorded in the church censuses of 1733, 1750, 1761–1762, 1805 and 1829–1831.

It has a semicircular altar, a spacious nave divided into naos and narthex, and a square bell tower above the west entrance. It was renovated in 1921–1925, 1965, 1990 and 2005. Of the village's former Greek Catholic church, built of stone in 1836, only the foundation can still be seen.
