Beriu

A commune in the hills south of Orăștie, with Cucuiș Monastery and a Roman fort at Orăștioara de Jos.

Beriu is a commune in the hills south of Orăștie, towards the Orăștie Mountains, made up of Beriu (the seat), Căstău, Cucuiș, Măgureni, Orăștioara de Jos, Poieni, Sereca and Sibișel. Beriu village is first recorded in 1332, and in 1673 it appears in documents as Berény.

The commune is home to Cucuiș Monastery, Sibișel Fortress, the Roman fort at Orăștioara de Jos and the remains of a Roman villa rustica at Beriu, and part of it lies within the Frumoasa Natura 2000 site.

Beriu's Church of the Dormition was built between 1894 and 1897 to plans by the Orăștie architect Nicolae Părău, replacing an 18th-century stone church destroyed by fire in the summer of 1894. In Căstău and Beriu, war memorials honour local people who fell in the wars.
