Wooden Church, Șoimuș

An oak-log church built in 1705, with an iconostasis of icons painted on glass in 1830.

The wooden St Nicholas Church in Șoimuș was built in 1705, the year carved into the lintel of the door to the nave. It is made of oak logs, with a rectangular plan and a polygonal apse in line with the nave; in the 19th century it was extended west with a narthex, topped by a low bell tower with a gallery and pyramidal spire.

Look out for the carved frame of the south entrance, decorated with diagonal crosses, “wolf's tooth” patterns and rosettes. The iconostasis is made of icons painted on glass in 1830.
