Șoimuș

A commune in the Mureș valley near Deva, with three 18th-century wooden churches.

Șoimuș is a commune in the Mureș valley, close to Deva, made up of Șoimuș (the seat), Bălata, Bejan, Bejan-Târnăvița, Boholt, Căinelu de Jos, Chișcădaga, Fornădia, Păuliș and Sulighete. The village's name, like its German name Falkendorf, refers to falcons.

The commune keeps three wooden churches: the one in Șoimuș, dedicated to Saint Nicholas and built of oak beams in 1705 — the year is carved into the lintel of the door to the nave —, the one in Sulighete, also dedicated to Saint Nicholas, and the one in Căinelu de Jos, dedicated to the Presentation of the Virgin, both from the 18th century.

Boholt has a Bronze Age archaeological site, the remains of a Roman villa rustica and the Boholt nature reserve, while part of the commune lies within the “Mureș River between Brănișca and Ilia” Natura 2000 site.
