Gyulay Castle, Mintia

The Gyulay family's castle from 1641, rebuilt in Classicist style in 1834, in a 5-hectare park by the Mureș.

The Gyulay family built their castle at Mintia, on the left bank of the Mureș, in 1641. Count Lajos Gyulay had it remodelled in Classicist style in 1834 to plans by the architect Stuller; the main façade is arcaded, and the rear gallery looks out over the park. The castle and its park of about 5 ha are listed together as a historic monument.

The castle was ransacked during the 1784 uprising and again in 1848–1849. It was home to Lajos Gyulay, author of one of the longest private diaries in Hungarian literature, and later to the historian and orientalist Géza Kuun, who built up a rich library and archive here. It was returned to the heirs in 2007; it is private property and can be seen from outside.
