Vețel

A Mureș commune with the ruins of the Roman settlement of Micia, the Gyulay manor at Mintia and a medieval church at Leșnic.

Vețel is a commune in the centre-west of the county, along the Mureș corridor and into the Poiana Ruscă Mountains, made up of Vețel (the seat), Boia Bârzii, Bretelin, Căoi, Herepeia, Leșnic, Mintia, Muncelu Mare, Muncelu Mic and Runcu Mic. Mintia, Vețel and Leșnic line the Mureș, while Muncelu Mic, Muncelu Mare, Runcu Mic and Boia Bârzii are mountain villages.

On the left bank of the Mureș, opposite the Mintia power station, lie the ruins of Micia, a Roman settlement that grew up around a large fort. Although only a rural settlement (pagus), it had a grid of streets, baths, an amphitheatre and a river port on the Mureș with stone quays.

Saint Nicholas Church in Leșnic, one of the old foundations of the Romanian knezes of the Hunedoara region, was built in the late 14th century and keeps mural paintings in the nave. Mintia has the Gyulay Ferenc manor with its park and a 16th-century Reformed church; the village's old wooden church has been on display at the National Museum of the Romanian Peasant in Bucharest since 1991.
