Germisara Roman Fort (Cigmău)
A Roman auxiliary fort near Geoagiu, known locally as the “Giant's Fortress”, with a civilian settlement beside it.

The Roman fort of Germisara, also called the Cigmău fort, was a fort for auxiliary troops with a civilian settlement alongside. The archaeological site — known locally as the “Giant's Fortress” — lies on the Turiac plateau, the first terrace of the Mureș, about 2 km from Geoagiu towards Simeria, in the village of Cigmău, on the right bank of the Mureș.
Germisara is recorded in the Tabula Peutingeriana, in Ptolemy's Geography and in the Ravenna Cosmography. Until 1990 the land was farmed, which partly or wholly destroyed the walls, and the stone was taken by people from nearby villages; archaeological digs began only in 2000.
