Geoagiu

The town where the Geoagiu meets the Mureș, with the Geoagiu-Băi spa and one of Romania's oldest churches.

Geoagiu lies where the Geoagiu river flows into the Mureș, at the south-eastern foot of the Metaliferi Mountains. Besides the town itself it takes in ten villages, including the Geoagiu-Băi spa resort and the village of Aurel Vlaicu, birthplace of the Romanian aviation pioneer.

The town has the Rotunda — Geoagiu's Romanesque chapel, a circular church built of reused Roman brick. Excavations in 1993–2004 found more than 200 graves around it, the oldest from the late 11th century, which probably makes it the oldest medieval church on Romanian territory; today it can be visited as a museum.

Next to it is the Gothic Reformed church (15th–16th centuries), with Roman reliefs set into its outer walls and an 1870 organ that still plays. Geoagiu-Băi has the Roman baths of Germisara, and Aurel Vlaicu village the inventor's memorial house.
