Micia Roman Fort

The ruins of a large fort and a Roman settlement with a street grid, baths, amphitheatre and port, on the Mureș bank.

Micia was an important Roman settlement that grew around a large fort. Its ruins now lie in the village of Vețel, on the left bank of the Mureș, opposite the Mintia power plant.

Although it only had rural status (a pagus), the settlement was highly urbanised: an orthogonal street grid, monumental public buildings — baths, an amphitheatre — and a port on the Mureș, fitted with stone-masonry quays. Around 1840 a votive altar of the 2nd–3rd century, dedicated to the god Silvanus Domesticus, was found in the ruins; it shows how pastures and salt mines were administered in Roman Dacia.
