Costești-Blidaru Fortress

The strongest fortified complex among the Dacian fortresses of the Orăștie Mountains, on Blidaru ridge, part of UNESCO World Heritage.

The Dacian fortress of Costești-Blidaru stands near the village of Costești, Orăștioara de Sus commune, on Blidaru ridge (750 m), on the left bank of the Grădiște stream. It was built in the 1st century BC as a defence against the Roman conquest and is one of the six Dacian fortresses of the Orăștie Mountains inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

It is the strongest fortified complex in the area: it spreads over a plateau of almost 6,000 sq m and has two linked enclosures with six towers in all. The first fortress, trapezoidal, occupies the upper plateau and has four outer towers at its corners; the entrance went through tower I, designed so that attackers had to turn and expose their flank. The second, pentagonal enclosure was built to the west of the first.
