Govăjdia Blast Furnace
A furnace from 1810, Europe's first continuous-flow blast furnace — a relic of the iron-making tradition that grew into industrial Hunedoara.

Built between 1806 and 1810 near the village of Govăjdia (Ghelari commune, about 20 km from Hunedoara), the furnace was, when it went into operation, the first continuous-flow blast furnace in Europe and the second in the world, smelting iron ore brought from the Poiana Ruscă Mountains. It operated until 1924, marking one of the starting points of the iron-making tradition that would later turn Hunedoara into a major steel centre.
Listed as an industrial architecture monument in 2000, the complex is now in an advanced state of disrepair, despite being included, since 2021, in a national restoration programme. It remains, nonetheless, a unique piece of industrial heritage on the Romanian metallurgical landscape.
