Commune
Ghelari
A mining commune in the Poiana Ruscă range, with the Govăjdia Blast Furnace, a medieval iron-smelting furnace and old churches.

Ghelari is a commune in the Poiana Ruscă Mountains, about 20 km from Hunedoara, made up of the villages of Ghelari (the seat), Govăjdia, Plop and Ruda. The area has a long tradition of mining and working iron ore, from which Hunedoara's steel industry also grew.
At Govăjdia stands the 1806–1810 Blast Furnace, a listed monument regarded as the first continuous-flow furnace in Europe. Ghelari keeps an iron-reduction furnace, a stone church from 1770 and a memorial cross, while Ruda has the Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel church, from 1653.
