Petrila Mine (Planeta Petrila)
The oldest mine in the Jiu Valley, now turned into an open-air museum.

Petrila Mine closed in 2015, after more than a century of coal extraction, and was listed the same year as a historic monument of exceptional national value. The complex, bought by Hunedoara County Council in 2022, includes the mechanical workshops, the compressor building, the power plant with its distinctive chimney, the New Shaft with its cage lift and the Central Shaft, covering nearly 164,000 sq m.
Known as “Planet Petrila”, the former mine now hosts guided tours, film screenings and the international Opera Nights festival, part of a PNRR-funded urban regeneration project aiming to bring it permanently into the tourist circuit.
That entry does not exist.
