Petrila

The oldest mining town of the Jiu Valley, now a gateway to the Jieț Gorge and its former mine turned museum.

Petrila is first documented in 1499 and grew from the 1840s as a mining centre, around the Lonea and Petrila mines. The mine, closed in 2015, was listed as a historic monument and gradually turned into “Planet Petrila” — an open-air museum with guided tours and the Opera Nights festival.

The town's territory also holds the Jieț Gorge (10 ha) and the Taia Gorge (2 ha) nature reserves, a starting point for the Parâng plateau, as well as Conacul Rădăcinilor, a hotel and leisure complex opened in 2023 in the Jieț gorge.
