Sarmizegetusa Regia

The capital of the Dacian kingdom, on a 1,200 m summit — UNESCO World Heritage since 1999.

Sarmizegetusa Regia was the political and religious centre of the Dacian kingdom for over a century and a half, reaching its peak under Decebalus. The fortress, built in the “murus dacicus” technique across five terraces, covers almost 30,000 m².

The nearby sacred area holds rectangular temples and the famous circular sanctuary — a wood-and-stone “calendar”, one of the most discussed structures in Romanian archaeology.
