Two-Coloured Forest
A hillside that looks cut in two colours, at the Tăia Gorges near Petrila — evergreen spruce on one side, golden beech on the other.

Pădurea Bicoloră (the “Two-Coloured Forest”) formed nearly half a century ago, when one half of the slope was cleared and replanted with spruce, while the other half stayed natural beech forest. The line between the two kinds of vegetation stayed almost perfectly straight, from the hilltop down to the valley.
The contrast is visible year-round — the spruce stays green, the beech changes colour — but it's most spectacular in autumn, for a few weeks, when the beech foliage turns golden-rust. The spot lies on the way to the Tăia Gorges, a protected nature reserve, a few kilometres from Petrila.
