Șura Mare Cave
A river cave in Ohaba-Ponor village, in the Grădiștea Muncelului–Cioclovina Nature Park, with a 40 m-high entrance and Romania's second-largest bat colony — for trained cavers only.
Șura Mare Cave is in Ohaba-Ponor village (Pui commune), on the Ponor valley at the foot of the Fruntea Mare cliff, in the Grădiștea Muncelului–Cioclovina Nature Park. The entrance is about 40 m high and 12 m wide at the base. The Big Hall, about 2,300 m from the entrance, is the most spectacular area, with flowstone and gours; a deep siphon halts progress about 800 m beyond it. Sources differ on the length (between 6.6 and 11.1 km).
Archaeological digs in the first hall found traces of Neolithic habitation and Hallstatt-era amber and bronze ornaments. The cave shelters the second-largest bat colony in Romania, after Huda lui Papară. Access is recommended only for well-trained cavers in experienced teams, with neoprene suits, waterproof bags, safety rope and light sources.
