Aninoasa
The county's smallest town, grown around its coal mine, between Petroșani and Vulcan.

Aninoasa is a Jiu Valley town made up of Aninoasa itself and the village of Iscroni, stretched along the Aninoasa stream near the confluence of the Western and Eastern Jiu rivers, about 7 km from Petroșani and 5 km from Vulcan. Its name comes from anin, the Romanian word for alder.
The town grew with mining: coal extraction began in the 1880s, when its first workers' colony was also built. Aninoasa was declared a town in 1989, when it had over 6,000 inhabitants, and the mine closed for good in spring 2006, after a long decline.
Traseul Ruinelor, a themed trail of about 12 km, runs from Vulcan down the Valea Ungurului to Aninoasa, and the town also lies on the Petroșani – Dealul Babii – Bănița hiking loop.
