Crișcior

A mining commune next to Brad, with a 14th-century stone church and the old Gurabarza gold-processing plant.

Crișcior is a commune next to the town of Brad, in the Zarand Country, made up of Crișcior (the seat), Barza, Valea Arsului and Zdrapți. Beneath it runs a network of galleries and shafts dug over several centuries, in the Ruda-Barza and Valea Morii mining sectors.

Ore was brought to the surface through the Victor gallery (later “1 Mai”), 1.2 km south of Barza, and carried by cableway to the Gurabarza processing plant, built in 1898, where large quantities of gold, silver, zinc, copper and sulphur were extracted. The narrow-gauge industrial railway between Brad and Crișcior, from 1906–1907, is a listed historic monument.

Crișcior village keeps the stone Church of the Dormition, founded in the late 14th century by the local knez Bâlea and his wife, with important fragments of mural painting from that time, while Zdrapți has a wooden church built in 1852 and dedicated to Saint Demetrius.
