Densuș
A Hațeg village looking out to the Retezat, famous for its stone church built from Roman ruins.

Densuș is a commune in the north-west of the Hațeg Country, made up of Densuș (the seat), Criva, Hățăgel, Peșteana, Peștenița, Poieni and Ștei. From the village the view opens south across the basin to the Retezat ridges.
The commune is famous for St Nicholas' Church in Densuș, one of the oldest churches in Romania still in continuous use: built in the 13th century from Roman stones taken from nearby ruins, it has a roof of stone slabs and fragments of murals from 1443 by the painter Ștefan.
Peșteana, in the same commune, has another 13th-century stone church, the Descent of the Holy Spirit, also built with reused Roman blocks. Densuș also has a bust of Ovid Densușianu.
