Town

Simeria

A town born out of Transylvania's first railway, home to Romania's oldest and largest dendrological park.

Simeria began as a railway workers' colony in 1866–1867 and grew alongside the Arad–Alba Iulia line — Transylvania's first railway, opened in 1868 — becoming an important railway junction once the branch line to the Jiu Valley opened in 1870. It split administratively from Biscaria commune in 1891 and gained town status in 1952.

The town also holds the Simeria Arboretum (Simeria Dendrological Park), the former park of the Gyulay family manor, documented since 1763 and turned into a dendrological park in 1949 — today one of Romania's most valuable collections of trees and shrubs.
