Dobra

An old medieval market town south of the Mureș, on the edge of the Pădureni Country, with listed wooden churches.

Dobra is a commune in the west of the county, made up of 13 villages: Dobra (the seat), Abucea, Bujoru, Făgețel, Lăpușnic, Mihăiești, Panc, Panc-Săliște, Rădulești, Roșcani, Stâncești, Stâncești-Ohaba and Stretea. Dobra village lies on the DN68A, a few kilometres south of the Mureș, where the Mureș valley meets the Pădureni Country, on the Dobra-Bătrâna river, which rises near Rusca peak.

First recorded in 1387, Dobra was an important trading centre in the Middle Ages, its fairs drawing merchants from Bohemia, Poland and Germany. A peasant uprising broke out here in 1721, and towards the end of the 18th century the village belonged to the military border region; the former hussar barracks later became the “La husariu” hotel.

The commune has listed wooden churches at Rădulești, Stâncești and Abucea, a 14th-century stone church at Roșcani and a 17th-century one at Lăpușnic. Dobra is also the end point of the yellow-band trail that crosses the Poiana Ruscă Mountains from Hunedoara.
