Bănița

The commune at the gateway to the Jiu Valley, with the Dacian fortress and Roman fort at Bănița, the Bănița Gorge, Bolii Cave and the Crivadia Gorge.

Bănița is a mountain commune in the south of Hunedoara County, at about 756 m altitude, made up of the villages of Bănița (the seat), Crivadia and Merișor. National road DN66 and the Simeria–Petroșani railway run through the Bănița Gorge, at the entrance to the Jiu Valley.

The commune has the Dacian fortress of Bănița, part of the UNESCO World Heritage List, and a nearby Roman fort. At Crivadia stand the ruins of a medieval fortress tower, next to the “Crivadia Gorge” nature reserve.

Bolii Cave, a river cave lit by electric lighting on the Galbina river, is a nature reserve and a frequent stop for visitors. The area connects to the Grădiștea Muncelului–Cioclovina Nature Park and to the themed trail up to the Dacian fortress.
