Lupeni

A town in the west of the Jiu Valley, gateway to the Straja resort and the stage of major miners' strikes.

Lupeni is first documented in 1770, was granted town status in 1960 and has been a municipality since 2003 — the third-largest town in the Jiu Valley, about 18 km from Petroșani. It grew as a coal-mining centre and remains tied to the region's labour history, having been the site of the 1929 Lupeni strike and the 1977 Jiu Valley miners' strike.

The road from Lupeni leads to the Straja ski resort, about 8 km away, on the slopes of the Vâlcan Mountains.
