Vața de Jos

A Zarand commune with thermal springs, wooden churches and the birthplace of Father Arsenie Boca.

Vața de Jos is a commune in the Crișul Alb valley, in the north-west of the county, made up of 13 villages: Vața de Jos (the seat), Basarabasa, Birtin, Brotuna, Căzănești, Ciungani, Ocișor, Ociu, Prăvăleni, Prihodiște, Tătărăștii de Criș, Târnava de Criș and Vața de Sus. Father Arsenie Boca, buried at Prislop Monastery, was born in Vața de Sus on 29 September 1910.

The Băile Vața spa, with thermal water at 36–38 °C used since the mid-19th century, has reopened after more than a decade of neglect.

The commune has many wooden churches; those in Căzănești, Basarabasa, Birtin, Ciungani, Ocișor and Ociu are listed monuments. The Căzănești church, from the 17th century (18th according to the monuments list) and enlarged in the 19th, keeps paintings from 1828, while the one in Târnava de Criș, from 1824, recalls the fighting of 8 November 1848, when about 283 Romanians were killed here.
