Vulcan
The second-largest town in the Jiu Valley, gateway to Vulcan Pass and the Devil's Cave.

Vulcan is mentioned as far back as the Josephine Land Survey (1769–1773) and has been a municipality since 2003 — the second-largest town in the Jiu Valley after Petroșani. Like its neighbours, it grew around coal mining, and today it's best known for the Devil's Cave (Peștera Dracului), with its own waterfall, found on one of five themed trails built in the area in 2022.
From Vulcan, the road climbs to Vulcan Pass (1,621 m), which links the Jiu Valley to northern Oltenia — historically crossed by Prince Michael the Brave in 1600, and the site of fighting during World War I.
