Town

Uricani

The town at the western end of the Jiu Valley, stretched along the Western Jiu at the foot of the Retezat and Vâlcan mountains.

Uricani is the westernmost town of the Jiu Valley, on the Western Jiu river at 650–750 m, between the Retezat and Vâlcan mountains. The town takes in Uricani, Câmpu lui Neag and Valea de Brazi and stretches a long way along the valley, on the DN66A road coming from Lupeni.

It grew with mining: the first gallery opened in 1947 at Plaiu Balomir, and hard-coal extraction made Uricani an almost single-industry place, given town status in the 1960s. At Câmpu lui Neag, part of the village was demolished in 1987 for an open-pit coal mine; mining stopped after 1989 and a deep lake now fills the pit.

Today Uricani is one of the gateways to Retezat National Park: from Câmpu lui Neag trails lead to the Buta Gorges and the limestone Retezat, and the mountain road to Gorj passes the Valea de Pești reservoir.
